Grapefruit Marmalade: A Total Failure

I'm sad to report that grapefruit marmalade is probably the worst thing I've ever made. I've had homemade grapefruit marmalade before, so I know it can be a great success but the batch I made tasted like we were eating aspirin like you'd eat candy. In short, it was the most bitter thing ever to touch my taste buds. Jared couldn't even pretend to like it and he is usually very excited about anything I make. It was so bad, I won't bother to tell you how I made it . . . just know it's not around the house anymore. The worst part is, the recipe used a TON of sugar. It was also a 2 day process and required a lot of stirring over a hot stove. I feel so wasteful tossing it, but there was no way we could choke it down. Anyway, I can cross that off my list of things to do to use up grapefruit. You've been warned!

What a shame, huh?

That is a shame :(
Good thing you have a million more grapefruits to try other recipes with. Ha.

awww...that's really too bad, it looks so pretty in the photo! i can only imagine the lengthy process with grapefruits! berries are much easier, but grapefruit marmalade sounds so intriguing.

Haha, I was thinking more along the lines of: "Now that I've posted about my grammar nerdiness, I hope people don't find too many mistakes in MY posts!"

I agree with vegan addict-- at least it *looks* pretty

You win some and you lose some. =) Good luck next time!

Aww, I'm so sorry that the grapefruit marmalade didn't turn out quite right :0( We all have recipe-mishaps sometimes, so no worries!! And besides - this is ONE failure, out of HUNDREDS of successes :0)

Ah, such a bummer! I hate when that happens.

Maybe next time you can add some oranges to the mix, to cut through the grapefruityness a bit. At least it looks really good!

Oh...that is a shame! And it actually does look very tasty..... But I guess this is just a way to learn how NOT to make grapefruit marmalade

at least you tried... i think about making my own jams... then i go to buy what i need (i.e. fruit pectin) and tofu out

It LOOKS pretty if that counts for anything. I bet your next attempt will turn out better!

Oh no!! It at least sounds like it could have been good. Have you ever had grapefruit marmalade before? Oh well, live and learn I guess.

Oh no! I hate the food waste when recipes turn out bad. I have a tried-and-true grapefruit jelly recipe if you'd like, but I'm partial to marmalades and jams too!

At the risk of sounding terribly corny, sometimes things have to go wrong so that you know how to make them right next time. Right? :)

Aww, that is a shame. It doesn't look near as awful as you describe.

That's too bad, it does sound like an interesting experiment though.

Dear Lori:

After much trial and error, I've figured out how to
make a SPECTACULAR grapefruit marmalade. The secret to getting rid of the bitter taste is: 1) Cook the peel separately first, to leach out the bitternes, and DISCARD that water. 2) PEEL the membranes off the pulp sections--these also add bitter taste to the cooked product. I use WAY LESS SUGAR than any recipe I've seen yet, and it tastes GREAT. However, with so little sugar, I do have to add pectin to make the cooled product's texture not runny. See my BLOG for the detailed recipe (and pix).
